Count Your Blessings

The Sermon on the Mount is arguably Jesus’ most famous teaching. And it begins with what are called The Beatitudes, a series of statements where Jesus lists those who are “blessed” in the eyes of God.

As you read Matthew 5:1-11, it becomes clear that the people we do NOT think are blessed are the people God says ARE blessed. For example, we think, “Cursed are the meek, for they will be taken advantage of” while Jesus says, “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5).

People we do not think are blessed are the people God says are blessed. And that category of people contains someone you know very well: you.

You see, we don’t tend to think we are blessed because we compare ourselves to people who are apparently blessed more than us (we may live in a 1,450 square foot house but we compare ourselves to those who live in an 1,875 square foot house).

Instead of focusing on the ways God has blessed us, we focus on ways He has not blessed us. In that way, we are like a 4-year-old who is blessed with a the day at the zoo seeing zebras and camels and polar bears but then has a meltdown because they didn’t get to see the tigers.

You are blessed. I am blessed. May we count our blessings.

This past Sunday I preached on The Beatitudes as part of our new series – The Kingdom on Earth. At the end of my message I shared a list of theological blessings and I wanted to share them with you. To give credit where it’s due, I took this list from “Escaping the Matrix” by Greg Boyd.

I wanted to share this list with you because no matter what you are going through right now , no matter the circumstances of your life — whether great or good or bad or whether you are living a nightmare — you are blessed.

Here is a list of things that are true of everyone who is a follower of Jesus Christ. A list of blessings we need to cling to, especially when we don’t feel blessed by God. May these truths not be just information, but may you experience them as real. May you be blessed as you read them:

  • You are filled with the peace and joy of God (John 14:27; Romans 14:17)
  • You are God’s beloved child (John 1:12; Ephesians 1:5)
  • You are completely forgiven, perfectly righteous, and free from condemnation (Romans 5:1; 1 Corinthians 6:20; Ephesians 1:7)
  • You are God’s glorious temple and are filled with His fullness (1 Corinthians 6:19; Ephesians 3:19)
  • You are holy and blameless (Ephesians 1:4)
  • You are the recipient of an eternal, infinitely rich inheritance (Ephesians 1:11, Ephesians 1:18; 1 Peter 1:4)
  • You are inseparable from God’s love and will never be abandoned (Matthew 28:20; Romans 8:35-39)
  • You are the beautiful bride of Christ who ravishes the heart of God (Song of Songs 4:1-15; Song of Songs 6:4-9; Ephesians 5:25-32)
  • You are one over whom the Lord rejoices, sings, and claps (Zephaniah 3:17) You are the one for whom the Lord throws a party (Luke 15:7-10)
  • You are indwelled by a fearless Spirit of love and self-control (2 Timothy 1:7)
  • You are more than a conquerer in all things (Romans 8:37)

You are blessed. I am blessed. May we count our blessings.

………………………….I know I AM truly BLESSED !! A while ago a friend was on a shall we say ,”pity party”. Just at that moment , a young adult was being pushed in a wheel chair . Bib on , drool & non responsive . More than likely , cerabal palsy. Still feel like feeling sorry for yourself ?? As I have shared w/ you , we are after all still humans . We have emotions . BUT , through out my life I know I am blessed & so appreciate what God has done through my life . Because first hand – I see those that are not ! My heart breaks for them to KNOW how much we are blessed !! When you demonstrated , a deep breath – that IS blessed !! The list you gave – THAT IS
blessed !! I thank GOD all the time , that I was spared from some things that have made me want everyday to be closer to Him !! And from the things I have not been spared , have made me want more of Him !! I pray that everyone would “GET”
this !! “Draw closer to Him and He will draw closer to you !!
