The “podcast” is one of my favorite inventions in recent history. I love being able to download and listen to sermons by pastors from across the country. Now that I am preaching every Sunday, podcasts are one of the primary ways that I get fed spiritually.
Yesterday I began listening to a message preached by Brian Anderson, lead pastor of Vineyard Phoenix North, a sermon titled “Biblical Discipleship,” and his words challenged me so much I transcribed an excerpt of his message below.
The apostle Paul said: “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 11:1). Let me ask you this — if a brand new Christian, someone totally new to the faith, followed you around for 30 days — if they followed your example — if they were attached to your hip for a month and went everywhere you did and observed everything you did — at the end of that 30 day period what would that brand new Christian think that Christians do?
Think about that.
It’s kind of challenging isn’t it?
Would a brand new Christian think going to church every single Sunday was a non-negotiable?
Would a brand new Christian think that Christians read their Bible on a regular basis, if they lived with you for 30 days?
Would they think that Christians have a prayer life?
Would they think that Christians give their finances back to God, that they give generously to the local church and other charities?
Would they think that when Christians come across sick people, they take the time to lay their hands on them and pray for them to be healed?
Would they think that Christians minister to the poor?
Would they think that Christians cast out demons when they run into demonized people?
What would a brand new Christian think that Christians do if they hung out with you for a month — if they followed your example?
***Join us this Sunday at The Eastside Vineyard Church. My message is titled “Our God is Healer” (focusing in on Matthew 4:23-25) and I will be tackling questions like: Do you believe God makes people sick? Is God the author of disease? Is it God’s perfect will that people go through life-altering tragedies? Sunday. May 29th. 6pm. More info at tevchurch.org***
